Mrs Bodgit’s Book Of Househol Wisdom

Years ago when I returned to be a solo homeowner, I was bought me a book on household maintenance – how to do a simple paint and tidy up; how to rewire a plug and how to locate the stopcock for the mains water etc.  All these things sound amusingly basic but when faced with having to deal with everything oneself instead of being able to pick up the phone and ask someone else to, it can be a very steep learning curve.  I’ve needed most of the chapters in the fifteen years of ownership.  Such as when I needed to turn the water off in a tearing hurry.  The pump on my fancy push button shower had developed a fault in my ensuite.  The water had come on as usual but however hard I hit the off button, nothing happed and I was wasting glorious hot water!  I leapt out, got dressed and beetled down to the under sink cupboard. Sure enough, there it was.  I turned off the water to stop it keep refilling the hot tank and I also turned off the mains electricity at the control board to cut power to the shower pump.   These safety and sensible actions were applauded by the service guy when he came to replace the shower pump.  Hurrah!
